Destinations:

(Ft. Myers, Sanibel, Captiva, Useppa Island, Bonita Springs, Naples,  Marco Island, Ten Thousand Islands and Everglades National Park) Join VISIT FLORIDA for an educational, and inspirational, excursion along Florida's beautiful southwest coast and the historic Tamiami Trail (U.S. 41), soon to celebrate its 75th anniversary. Explore this area of Florida where American icons such as President Dwight D. Eisenhower, Thomas Edison, Henry Ford and Harvey Firestone found solace and relaxation.

Pioneering Americans like Barron Collier, in cooperation with native-American Indians (Seminoles), African-American locals and immigrants from all origins, first forged a path that now reaches from Tampa to Miami, thus the name "Tamiami" Trail. This effort of enormous proportions virtually opened up Southwest Florida for travel and tourism. Ponce de Leon came first, but there were many other historic personalities who made this area what it is today...a vacation destination rich with history, beauty and heritage for travelers worldwide.

Our journey will take us from the Ft. Myers area - including Sanibel, Captiva and Useppa Island - to Bonita Springs, Naples, Marco Island, and Ten Thousand Islands at the southwest tip of Everglades National Park.

--- [ Red Cliffs Ranch and the Colorado River ] ---

O.A.R.S., the premiere outfitter of the Western U.S., would like to invite travel writers to join them on a press trip to Moab, Utah. Journalists interested in attending should contact Steve Markle at 209-736-4677 ext. 716 or e-mail stevem@oars.com.  When responding by e-mail please include your name, e-mail and telephone number.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Needles District of Canyonlands

You'll meet your guides and fellow adventures at the O.A.R.S. Moab office at 10:00 AM on Friday. From here you will depart for your Elephant Hill 4x4 adventure.

Your 4x4 tour is to Elephant Hill, located in the Needles District of Canyonlands. An exciting climb up sharp switchbacks and steep, rocky inclines delivers you (in the comfort of our smooth-riding 4x4s) to tall, orange-and-white-banded spires, the Confluence Overlook - where you can watch the Colorado and Green rivers. Visit walls covered in ancient Indian writings, fossilized dinosaur tracks, and a myriad of other awesome sights along the way.

At the conclusion of your adventure, your guides will shuttle you to the Red Cliffs Lodge for an evening of relaxation and enjoyment. You will dine at Red Cliffs premier restaurant and spend the rest of the evening as you choose.

Days 2-4 - Colorado River

This morning, we'll drive south of Moab to our Colorado River put-in. After arriving at the Potash put-in, our guides will give a thorough safety talk and introduction to our boats and gear. Pushing off from the shore, we leave the familiar behind and begin our unique adventure through Canyonlands National Park.

The first fifty miles of your river trip, practically gleaming in its peacefulness and rugged beauty, will orientate your senses to a land about as far from urban living as you can get. Your eyes will be intoxicated by the absolute redness of the sandstone looming heavenward, by the bright green tamarisks and willows thriving beside the river and by the fairest blue skies on earth. At a pace pleasantly different than that of our nation's highways, desert panoramas slowly develop and change, increasing your sensitivities to light and shadow.

Besides the time spent on the water, there'll be ample opportunities to do whatever you choose. Spend a morning floating and paddling in one of our inflatable kayaks--sturdy little vessels that get you even closer to the soothing gurgle of the river.

The first day might give your group an opportunity to walk to the Lathrop Ruin, where antiquated pictographs of a solstice calendar and beautiful painted outlines of ancient Anasazi hands 'grab' your attention. You might also have the opportunity to explore Indian Creek Canyon, where fascinating Native American ruins and a stunning seasonal waterfall await you.

On the Day 4, we reach the end of Cataract Canyon and the flooding waters of Lake Powell. As we motor out on the reservoir toward Hite Marina, it's tough not to imagine the wonders drowned below us. What more could Glen Canyon show us?! The bittersweet ending is now here. Thankfully, the scenic flight back to Moab grants a bit of time to reflect, as you retrace your path through Cataract Canyon from high above, looking down on the beautiful landscape with a bird's-eye perspective.

From Moab you are returned to Red Cliffs for the final evening of your adventure with O.A.R.S.

Included:
All lodging, meals, activities, and transportation from lunch on the first day to dinner the final night are included.

It is the responsibility of the journalists get to Moab and back, and any pre or post trip accommodations, activities, etc.

Journalists interested in attending should contact Steve Markle at 209-736-4677 ext. 716 or e-mail stevem@oars.com.  When responding by e-mail please include your name, e-mail and telephone number.
